Peptides like insulin and GLP-1 are among the most important medicines today, but they break down quickly in the stomach and gut, so most of them have to be injected. They are also expensive to make, need cold storage and are hard to get to patients in many parts of the world.
The company engineers naturally beneficial gut bacteria to produce and release therapeutic peptides inside the body. Patients would take a daily capsule, and the bacteria would deliver the peptide from the gut into the bloodstream, removing the need for injections.
